New York Mets Hope to Re-Sign Reliever Greg Burke

The New York Mets waived relief pitcher Greg Burke last month to try and create room on their 40 man roster. Burke, 31, became a minor league free agent. The Mets are interested in re-signing the right handed reliever, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports. The Mets, however, will likely have competition for Burke's services. Rubin's report also indicates that the Toronto Blue Jays and Colorado Rockies are also expected to pursue the submarining righty.

Burke rode the Las Vegas shuttle for the Mets last season, going 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA in 32 appearances. Burke showed ability to contribute after making the team out of spring training, but he quickly became caught up in a numbers game. Burke had options remaining, so every time the Mets needed to add a pitcher to the roster Burke was usually the one shipped to Las Vegas. Burke's effectiveness began to decline the more he was yo-yoed between Triple-A and the majors, as he pitched to an ERA north of 15 after the All Star Break.

Burke is a useful guy to have around, and the Mets will likely try to sign him to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Burke, however, appears likely to move on if he can get a more stable opportunity elsewhere. In an age where teams like to cycle through new relievers every year, one team's trash can become another team's treasure. The same may hold true for Burke, who may find a better situation elsewhere.
