The New York Mets are facing an upcoming 40 man roster crunch, and in advance of that roster crunch the Mets will need to clear some space from their 40 man roster. The Mets entered the offseason with a full 40 man roster and eight players on the 60 day disabled list, meaning that the Mets will need to remove eight players to add all of them back before the end of the World Series. The Mets got the process started yesterday, removing four players from the 40 man roster according to MetsBlog.com.
The Mets trimmed their 40 man roster from 40 to 36 by waiving four players. Two relievers, right hander Greg Burke and lefty Sean Henn, were both outrighted to the minor leagues and remain within the Mets' farm system. The Mets lost two other players on waivers. Left handed reliever Robert Carson was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels, while outfielder Mike Baxter was claimed by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Carson is not a huge loss for the Mets, considering that he struggled mightily this season. Carson gave up way too many home runs in pitcher friendly Citi Field, a trait that may not translate well for the Mets. As far as Baxter is concerned, he was a nice player for the Mets but is eminently replaceable stats wise. Baxter will always go down in Mets history for his tremendous catch in Johan Santana's no hitter. Mets' PR director Jay Horwitz echoed that sentiment on Twitter, stating "Mike Baxter gave up his body to preserve Johan Santana's no hitter. Always will have a place in Mets history. First class person. The best." The Mets will have to have their 40 man roster issues sorted out by mid-November before the Rule V draft.
