It appears that New York Mets' ace Matt Harvey will be going under the knife soon. Marc Carig of Newsday reports via Twitter that Harvey will undergo Tommy John surgery within the next week. Carig's information comes from Harvey's agent, Scott Boras. Harvey was expected to have the surgery by the end of October to ensure that the right hander would have plenty of time to rehab and be ready for spring training in 2015.
One interesting piece of news related to Harvey's surgery was reported earlier in the day. According to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, Mets executives had no idea when Harvey was going to undergo the surgery. The Mets had announced back on October 4th that Harvey would undergo the surgery, performed by Dr. James Andrews, but did not hear from the right hander since.
This miscommunication does not appear to be a big deal simply because the Mets are out of season. On most in-season injuries, the Mets' team doctors help schedule surgeries, including transportation to and from the procedure as well as a rehab plan. Given that Harvey's procedure will take place in the offseason, a lot of that planning falls to the pitcher and Boras. It is very possible that Harvey had not decided on the details of his surgery prior to the report being published, but it is expected that he and the Mets will work with Dr. Andrews to develop a rehab plan shortly after the surgery is completed.
