Johan Santana's 2013 season was done before it even began. Santana, who was expected to be the staff's ace out of spring training, was lost for the season after tearing a capsule in his left shoulder for the second time. It was a big blow for the Mets and for Santana, who was entering a contract year. Santana will hit the market hoping to be ready for spring training, and its possible that spring training could be held in Port St. Lucie for the eighth straight year.
The Mets are open to bringing Santana back on a new contract, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports. Santana, 34, has a 25 million dollar option for 2014 that the Mets are expected to decline. The Mets will instead pay Santana a 5.5 million dollar buy out and could consider signing him to a new free agent contract. Alderson spoke on WFAN radio on Monday and indicated the team is open to the idea of bringing Santana back. Santana's agent, Chris Leible, indicated that talks haven't begun yet but agreed that Santana could land back in New York.
Santana's comeback would be a nice story for the Mets, and bringing him back on a one year deal could make some sense considering the team needs depth in their starting rotation. The Mets can't count on Santana to be a part of the rotation considering that no one has ever made a successful recovery from a second capsule repair surgery. The Mets would need to bring in at least one other veteran starter to provide insurance, like Bronson Arroyo, to ensure that their backs are covered. If the price is right, Santana's potential would be worth a low-risk, high reward deal.
