Now that the 2013 minor league baseball season has come to a close, Mets 101 will take a look at all levels of the team's farm system. We will start with the rookie league Gulf Coast Mets and work our way all the way up the ladder to Triple-A Las Vegas. We'll look at the season that was for each affiliate, complete with a season recap, the best promotions, the top prospects, and a season MVP. We continue our series today in Kingsport, Tennessee, home of the Low-A Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League.
Final Record: 40-27, First Place Appalachian League Western Division
Season Review: The 2013 season was a successful one for the Kingsport Mets. Under the guidance of second year manager Jose Leger, Kingsport improved dramatically over the 2012 season. Kingsport finished the regular season with a 40-27 record and won their division to earn a trip to the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. The Kingsport Mets then lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Greenville Astros by dropping the last two games of a three game series. Nevertheless, it was a very successful season.
Best Promotion: Kingsport's best daily promotion was "2-Fer Tuesdays", where fans could get two of essentially anything for the price of one. The deal covered general admission tickets, hot dogs, sodas, popcorn, and more. Tuesdays also allowed fans who went to any Food City location in Kingsport to get complimentary tickets to the game, while supplies lasted.
SP Chris Flexen: Flexen was the ace for Kingsport during the 2013 season. Flexen went 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts for the K-Mets, striking out 62 batters in 69 innings pitched. Flexen also pitched to a sterling 0.93 WHIP after walking only 12 and allowing 53 hits throughout the year.
2B Yeixon Ruiz: Ruiz was Kingsport's lone All Star this year, but it was well deserved. Ruiz played in a team high 52 games and hit .304 with 12 RBI's, and finished as the team leader in runs scored (34), hits (59) and stolen bases (12).
1B Dominic Smith: Smith, the Mets' first round draft pick in 2013, earned a late season promotion to Kingsport in time for the playoffs. Smith showed some flashes in a brief sample with the K-Mets, collecting four doubles in six at bats and driving in four runs.
The team's MVP award goes to Flexen, who was a strong ace for the K-Mets. Flexen, a 14th round round draft pick in the 2012 draft, should be moving up the minor league ladder next season after a strong rookie campaign.
