After an initial rehab attempt apparently did not work, New York Mets' pitcher Matt Harvey has opted to undergo Tommy John surgery. The news, according to MetsBlog, was announced by the team in the last hour. Harvey was initially attempting to go through a throwing program to see if his arm could withstand the rigors of pitching, but he opted to go with the surgery today. The Mets announced that Harvey will be operated on by Dr. James Andrews at the end of the month.
Harvey went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA for the Mets and struck out 191 batters in 176.1 innings this season. Harvey was shut down for the year on August 27th after the tear was discovered, but Harvey vowed he would be back quickly. Harvey tweeted shortly after being shut down that he would be on the mound for Opening Day next season, but now has thought better of that plan. Harvey should be ready for spring training in 2015.
While Harvey's bravado was nice, this decision was the correct one. A torn ulnar collateral ligament is a tricky injury to recover from. If Harvey had opted not to have surgery, he could have pitched for a while without needing surgery like St. Louis Cardinals' ace Adam Wainwright. Harvey also could have ended up like Los Angeles Dodgers' starter Chad Billingsley, who rehabbed last offseason and ended up tearing it again his second start of the season, knocking him out until May 2014. By having the surgery now, Harvey will be good to go for the 2015 season and the Mets can now officially plan on life without their ace for one full year.
