At a noon press conference today, the New York Mets announced that they have agreed to a contract extension with manager Terry Collins. Collins, who has gone 225-261 in three seasons with the Mets, signed a two year contract with an option for the 2016 season. Collins is very popular with the team's veteran players, and David Wright has indicated on several occasions how favorably he views Collins. General Manager Sandy Alderson told reporters at the press conference that the team's performance in the last 100 games was a strong factor in the decision to bring Collins back for the 2014 season. The Mets actually played .500 ball over the last 100 games, going 50-50 even though they spent a lot of time without key cogs such as Marlon Byrd, John Buck, Matt Harvey, and David Wright.
The Mets also announced they will bring back Collins' entire coaching staff for the 2014 season. Alderson addressed reporters who felt that the hitting, and in particular hitting coach Dave Hudgens, was lacking. Alderson stated to SNY's Gary Apple that while the offense was subpar, he felt that Hudgens understood the organization's philosophy on hitting. Alderson indicated that the team expects to add some new bats in the winter, and that Collins should have a more complete roster next season.
Collins certainly earned the right to return with a better roster next season. Collins has been given next to nothing over the past three seasons and has still managed to keep his team competitive. These past three Mets' teams could have easily been 95 game losers given their lack of talent, but it is a credit to Collins that the Mets have played as well as they have. Now that Collins and his staff are in the fold for the next few years, the onus now falls on Alderson to upgrade his roster. Alderson has done a fine job rebuilding the team's farm system for the future, but now the Mets have payroll flexibility to improve the major league roster. The Mets can't simply sit on their hands and say that the market priced them out or the cost in prospects was too high. Mets fans have been patient with this rebuild, but the time has come for the Mets to make their move.
