NEW YORK—That’s a wrap, folks. The New York Mets (74-88) closed out the 2013 campaign with a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers (74-88) on Mike Piazza day at Citi Field. The Mets honored the beloved catcher prior to yesterday’s game and inducted him into the Mets Hall of Fame.
Eric Young Jr. had a great game yesterday. He led off the first inning with a single and promptly stole second and third base. He finished the year with 46 stolen bases to take home the 2013 NL stolen base title. David Wright drove Young home with a sac fly to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
The Brewers answered back in the fourth inning. They led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Carlos Gomez delivered a third straight single to left-center and Juan Lagares converted his 15th outfield assist on the year when he gunned out Jeff Bianchi at home as he tried to score from second. Lagares set a new Met rookie record for outfield assists on the season and registered the most assists for a rookie since Delmon Young had 16 for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. The Brewers ultimately scored two runs in the fourth and left with a 2-1 lead off of Mets’ starter Jon Niese.
Niese (8-8, 3.71) put in a fittingly gutsy effort to close out his up and down 2013 campaign. He gave up two runs on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out two on the afternoon.
The Mets took the led for good in the eighth. Juan Lagares reached on a throwing error. Lagares scored when the Brewers threw a sacrifice bunt next from Juan Centeno into right field to tie the game at 2-2. Eric Young singled home pinch runner Matt den Dekker to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.
Frank Francisco converted his first save of the season in the ninth.
