When you’re out of it, its still nice to play the role of spoiler. After dropping last night’s contest, the New York Mets (72-85) bounced back with a 4-2 victory over the playoff-bound Cincinnati Reds (90-68). While the loss did not eliminate the Reds from playoff contention, the loss impacted seeding in a crowded NL Central race.
The Mets jumped on Reds starter Mike Leake with a big second inning. Mike Baxter led the inning off with a double and was driven in by rookie shortstop, Wilfredo Tovar to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Tovar was thrown out at home when the next batter, pitcher Jon Niese, singled to right field. Eric Young Jr. followed Niese’s single with a ground ruled double to put runners on second and third with Daniel Murphy coming to bat. Murphy sent a 392 foot home run to right field to put the Mets up 4-0.
That would be all that Jon Niese (W, 8-8, 3.74 ERA) needed to earn his eighth win of the season. He allowed two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked only one batter on the night.
The Reds’ runs came on a Devin Mesoraco RBI groundout in the second and a Joey Votto RBI grounded into double play in the fifth.
Vic Black picked up his first career major league save in the ninth.
The Mets and Reds head back out tomorrow afternoon for the series finale. Daisuke Matsuzaka faces Mat Latos. First pitch is set for 12:35 in the afternoon.
