Welcome to the show, kid. Wilfredo Tovar’s seventh inning RBI single off Cliff Lee put his team ahead for good as the Mets took Tovar’s major league debut from the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3. With the win, the Mets swept the series and took the season series from the Phillies 10-9.
Carlos Torres (4-5, 3.36) got the start and was magnificent. He gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked three en route to his fourth victory on the year.
The Phillies jumped out to a lead in the second inning. Dominic Brown led the frame off with a walk and advanced to third on two productive outs. Kevin Frandsen singled Moore home to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
The Mets answered back in the fourth. Eric Young Jr. led the frame off with a single. Wilmer Flores doubled him over to third and the Mets had two runners in scoring position with no outs. After Daniel Murphy struck out, Andrew Brown drove Young in with an RBI groundout to tie the game. Lucas Duda then struck out to strand Flores on third.
The Phillies regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jimmy Rollins led the inning off with a double. Chase Utley followed up with a single and the Phillies had runners on the corners with no outs. After Torres induced a Carlos Ruiz fly out to short right field, Dominic Brown singled Rollins home to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Torres then loaded the bases but was able to get out of the inning allowing just the one run.
The Mets went ahead for good in the seventh behind a combination of Tovar and a little help from the Phillies fielders. Lucas Duda struck out to lead the inning off. A Juan Lagares single and Anthony Recker double later, Tovar came to the plate in search of his first career major league hit. Tovar sent a single to left to drive Lagares home and tie the game at 2. Recker scored thanks to an error by Dominic Brown.
Both teams added runs in the eighth to bring the sore to 4-3 and LaTroy Hawkins secured his 100th career save in the bottom of the ninth to secure the Met win.
The Mets head to Cincinnati for their last road series of the season. Aaron Harang (5-12, 5.69 ERA) replaces Zack Wheeler, who has been shut down for the year. He opposes Johnny Cueto (5-2, 3.02). First pitch is set for 7:10 Monday.
