Former Met Angel Pagan delivered a go ahead solo home run in the seventh inning off of Sean Henn to propel the San Francisco Giants (70-81) past the New York Mets (67-83) in the series opener by a score of 8-5. Pagan went 3-3 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored on the night.
Zack Wheeler started for the Mets and was ineffective over five innings of work. He had no command and his pitches were all over the zone as he issued a career high six walks in the start. He gave up four runs on three hits and struck out three over his five innings. He finished with a no decision.
The Giants jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Wheeler issued back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. After he got Brandon Crawford to fly out, Wheeler walked Tony Abreu to load the bases. Wheeler then issued his fourth walk of the inning when he walked opposing pitcher Yusmeiro Petit to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Angel Pagan followed the walk with an RBI single to put the Giants up 2-0. The next batter, Gregor Blanco, hit into an RBI fielders choice and it was 3-0.
The Mets answered back in the third inning. Ruben Tejada hit a lead off double and was sacrificed over by Wheeler. Eric Young Jr. grounded out to shortstop to drive Tejada in and bring the Mets within one at 3-1.
The Mets pulled ahead in the fourth inning. After back-to-back walks to lead off the inning Wilmer Flores, hit an RBI double to bring the Mets within one at 3-2. The next batter, Matt den Dekker singled home two to put the Mets up 4-3.
The Giants tied things up in the fifth behind a Buster Posey RBI single and went ahead for good on Pagan’s home run in the seventh. The Giants added two more in the eighth and another in the ninth to go up 8-4.
The Mets loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but were ultimately able to push just one run across to fall 8-5.
The Mets and Giants head back out to Citi Field tomorrow. Aaron Harang (5-12, 5.70) takes on Matt Cain (8-9, 4.24). First pitch is set for 7:10 PM.
