New York-The Washington Nationals came into New York needing to win all four games against the New York Mets to keep their wild card hopes alive. So far, they are 3 for 3. The Nationals did the job again tonight, shutting down the Mets 3-0 to win their third straight game at Citi Field.
Zack Wheeler (7-5, 3.22 ERA) pitched very well for the Mets, allowing only one run on eight hits over seven innings. Wheeler struck out six Nationals' batters, but was done in by a solo home run from Ryan Zimmerman in the sixth inning. Zimmerman's home run, his 22nd of the year, gave Washington a 1-0 lead. The Nats added two runs later in the game when Anthony Rendon hit a two run double off of Vic Black to extend the Nats' lead to 3-0.
Dan Haren (9-13, 5.02 ERA) cruised for the Nationals, going six innings and allowing only one hit and no runs. The Mets' offense was flat once again, collecting only three hits on the day. Haren combined with three Nationals' relievers to complete the shutout, while Rafael Soriano completed a scoreless ninth inning to wrap up his 41st save of the year.
Player of the Game:
Today's Player of the Game Award goes to the Nationals' pitching staff. Five Washington pitchers (Haren, Xavier Cedeno, Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard, and Soriano) combined to allow only three hits and shut out the Mets.
Post Game Notes:
- Juan Lagares picked up two of the three Met hits.
- Zimmerman, Rendon, and Ian Desmond picked up two hits each for Washington.
- Denard Span singled in the top of the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 22 games.
The Mets and Nationals will wrap up their four game set tomorrow afternoon in a 1:10 pm matinee. Aaron Harang (5-11, 5.76 ERA with Seattle Mariners) will make his Mets' debut as they try to avoid the four game sweep, while Washington will counter with Tanner Roark (5-0, 0.94 ERA).
