Back in June, the Mets used their first round draft pick, #11 overall, a pick they so closely guarded throughout numerous offseason free agent rumors, to draft an eighteen year old first baseman Dominic Smith out of Sierra High School in Gardena, California. There, Smith was a four-year starter, accumulating 168 hits in 305 at-bats for a .551 batting average with 21 homers and 164 RBI.
So with the draft pick, Sandy Alderson expected Smith to be an offensive force and he has not disappointed through his first 206 plate appearances. Smith debuted on June 22 with the Rookie-A Gulf Coast Mets and over the next two months, collected his first 48 hits as a pro, batting at a .287 clip, with nine doubles, three homers and 22 RBI. The rookie showed some patience at the dish as well, drawing 24 walks, for an on-base percentage of .384. The performance was good enough to earn Smith his first of hopefully many swift promotions through the Mets farm system and Smith joined Kingsport of the Appalachian League on August 28.
With the Kingsport Mets, Smith played in the last three games of the season, going 4-for-6 with four doubles, four RBI and two walks. Overall, Smith finished with a line of .301/.398/.439 along with 13 doubles and 26 RBI. He also appeared in two of Kingsport's three playoff games against the Greenville Astros, going 2-for-8 with one strikeout. It's a fantastic start to what the Mets hope will be a great career for their first baseman of the future.
