The month of August was a turbulent one for the New York Mets. The team finished with a sub .500 record and lost three members of their starting rotation (Matt Harvey, Jenrry Mejia, and Jeremy Hefner) for the season to injury. In spite of all the injuries, the Mets received several strong performances from their pitching staff in the month of August. The best performance, however, belonged to starter Dillon Gee. Gee went 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA for the month to earn our Mets 101 Met of the Month Award for August.
Gee has been a rock for the Mets since the end of May, and August was no exception. Gee pitched 42 innings in the month, allowing 40 hits and compiling a 25:7 strikeout to walk ratio. Gee's impeccable control has helped him salvage his season, which in turn has been a key in the Mets' strong second half performance. Gee had six starts in the month of August and went at least six innings in all of them. Gee pitched at least seven innings in four of his six starts, and the Mets emerged victorious each time Gee went at least seven innings.
Gee's surge has also allowed him to lead the team in victories with 10, and his 3.63 ERA does not really speak to how well he has pitched over the last few months. Gee had an ERA of 6.34 on May 30th, so he has lowered his ERA nearly three full runs over the course of the last three months. That is an indicator of outstanding pitching, and Gee has given the Mets exactly what they've needed nearly every time he has taken the ball of late. Gee's strong performance in the month of August also makes him the first pitcher to win the Met of the Month Award this season, a surprise considering R.A. Dickey took home the award four times last season.
