Miguel Cabrera welcomed Daisuke Matsuzaka back to the major leagues in the only way he knows how. Cabrera belted a three-run home run in the second inning as the Detroit Tigers (75-53) scored five runs in the first two innings to cruise to a 6-1 victory over the New York Mets (58-68).
The Tigers were all over Matsuzaka right from the start. Torii Hunter hit a solo shot in the first inning to put the Tigers up 1-0 before most of the fans found their seats. Marlon Byrd tied the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, but that would be all the Mets could muster for offense.
The next inning, Detroit put together a 2-out rally that all but decided the game. Hunter struck again with a ground rule double with runners on first and second to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The next batter, the aforementioned Cabrera, sent a 411-foot home run to left field to put the Tigers up 5-1.
Matsuzaka went on to settle down and retire the next ten batters he faced but the damage was done. His stuff was flat early in the game and guys like Cabrera are going to make you pay for leaving soft stuff up in the zone. He finished with a line of 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR on 86 pitches.
The Mets and Tigers head back out to Citi Field this afternoon. For the first time in major league history, we will see the starters of the All-Star game face off during a regular season game as Matt Harvey (9-4, 2.25) takes on Max Scherzer (18-1, 2.82). First pitch is set for 4:05.
