San Diego-After a three game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Mets faced gut check time. The Mets headed to San Diego to face a struggling Padres' team and had a chance to stop the bleeding with Zack Wheeler on the mound. Wheeler had one of his best starts of the season, but the game remained tied until the eighth inning. Marlon Byrd hit a two run double as the Mets defeated the Padres 4-1.
Wheeler had some of his best stuff of the season and started piling up the strikeouts early. Wheeler struck out 12 Padres' batters to establish a career high in six innings, and he only walked one to demonstrate his improved control. The Mets gave their young starter a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Josh Satin hit an infield single to drive in Daniel Murphy. The Padres tied it up in the bottom of the inning when left fielder Jaff Decker hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Chase Headley. Wheeler was pulled after six innings having allowed only one run on seven hits to go along with the 12 strikeouts. Wheeler did run up a very high pitch count though as he threw 115 pitches in six innings.
The game remained tied until the top of the eighth inning, when the Mets got two men on against Padres' reliever Luke Gregerson (5-7, 3.54 ERA). Marlon Byrd delivered a two run double to bring home both Mike Baxter and Daniel Murphy as the Mets grabbed a 3-1 lead. The Mets extended their lead in the next inning as John Buck hit his 15th home run of the season to push the lead to 4-1. Gonzalez Germen was able to pitch the final two innings in relief to pick up his first career save.
Player of the Game:
Today's Player of the Game Award goes to Mets' right fielder Marlon Byrd. Byrd went 2 for 4 with the game winning two run double in the eighth inning.
Post Game Notes:
- Scott Atchison (3-1, 3.34 ERA) picked up the win in relief for the Mets.
