Just in time for the New Year, Mets 101's Seven in Seven series returns as our gift to you. Each week, the Mets 101 staff will begin a countdown of topics related to the New York Mets (i.e. best third baseman, worst defeat, etc.). We will begin our countdowns with number seven and work all the way to number one. This week's Seven in Seven list counts down the seven biggest Met killers to plague our beloved franchise. Today we look at number seven on our list: Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson.
7. Bob Gibson
Stat Line Against the New York Mets: 51 games, 47 starts, 385 IP, 28-14, 2.57 ERA, 27 complete games, 306 K
Bob Gibson was one of the best pitchers to ever play the game of baseball. He won 251 games in his career and had a career ERA of 2.91. He won the NL Cy Young Award twice in 1968 and 1970; he was enshrined in Cooperstown in 1981.
Gibson’s impressive numbers included a stretch from 1964 through 1966 where the right-hander was nearly unbeatable. During those three seasons, Gibson went 12-1 against the Mets. His one loss? A 1-0 defeat.
Met hitters hit just .238 against him over his 16-year major league career. The Met with the highest batting average against Gibson (min. 50 at bats) goes to Wayne Garrett who hit .333 in 66 career at bats.
The numbers are simply staggering how dominant Gibson was against the Mets during his career. You know a pitcher owns you when he registers over a tenth of his career wins against your franchise and is a Hall of Famer.
Gibson’s 28 wins against the Mets do not place him atop the all-time wins list against the New York Mets. That honor goes to a certain former Atlanta Braves pitcher who owned the Mets during the 1990's. That pitcher will appear later in our count down so be sure to check it out!
