Now that the 2012 season has concluded for the New York Mets, we have taken a look at overall breakdowns for the offense, starting rotation, and bullpen this past season. We will now take a look at every player on the roster from A (Manny Acosta) to Y (Chris Young) as our Mets 101 Player Review series returns. In each review we will take a look at one player's 2012 performance and what role, if any, they can expect to have with the Mets in 2013. Today we will look at starter Johan Santana.
Mets 101 Player Review:Johan Santana
2012 Stats:21 starts, 117.0 Innings Pitched, 6-9, 4.85 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 111 Strikeouts
2012 Story: It was a tale of two seasons for Johan Santana. He came into 2012 with tampered expectations coming off of major capsulate surgery on his left throwing shoulder. The Mets were cautiously optimistic when he was ready for Spring Training and exuberated when he took the mound for opening day. Santana came out strong during the first too months of the season, finishing May with a 2-2 record and a 2.75 ERA. Then came that memorable night in Flushing. On June 1, Santana threw a career-high 134 pitches en route to the first no-hitter in Mets franchise history. Achieving the milestone was certainly a shining moment in franchise history, but it derailed Santana’s season. He spent two stints on the DL after the no-no and lost his last five starts to close the year out. He was shut down for the remainder of the season in mid-August.
Contract Status:Under Contract
Odds of Returning:100 Percent
2013 Role:Rotation Pitcher
Johan Santana is no longer the ace of this staff and is probably not worth the money the Mets are paying him this season. As the prospects come up, Johan can serve as a mentor to them and teach them how to be an effective major league pitcher. As for next season, hopefully Santana rested up and got healthy. Questions remain about how effective he will be but first and foremost he has to be healthy if we’re going to see results.
