The New York Knicks always plan on calling Madison Square Garden home. However, the NBA is all about expanding their product and their reach around the globe. Next season the Knicks will play a regular-season game in London.
The NBA is always looking to expand their global reach. They want to get their product out and in front of the rest of the world. As part of that effort the NBA has brought exhibition and regular season games overseas.
According to the NBA's official release, two regular season games have been scheduled for next season. One will take place in Mexico City and the other will involve the Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks in London.
The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves will play at the Mexico City Arena on Nov. 12, as part of NBA Global Games Mexico City 2014. NBA Global Games London 2015 will feature a game between the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks at The O2 on Jan. 15.
The two regular-season games will follow the NBA Global Games preseason games in October that will feature five teams — the Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs — playing a series of games in Brazil, China, Germany, and Turkey.
"While London and Mexico City each have their own unique culture, they both have rich sports traditions and share a great passion for the NBA," said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. "These regular-season games will bring the excitement and incredible competition of our league to more fans in Europe and Latin America."
These games abroad are usually something that bothers the average fan. Teams have to travel a long time, they have to deal with major time changes and every game overseas means a team loses a home game.
However, they need to make others just as popular because it's easy for Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James to remain recognizable. It might not be that way for Carmelo Anthony, LaMarcus Aldridge or Kevin Love. That's what the NBA wants to change.
"These regular-season games will bring the excitement and incredible competition of our league to more fans in Europe and Latin America," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said.
With the obvious disparity between markets, it's likely this will count as a Milwaukee home game. It's hard to imagine the NBA would strip the Knicks of a home game over Bucks. Last years game between the Knicks and Pistons cost Detroit a home game.
Hopefully these games will go well and the teams can come out of them without injury. The last thing the league needs is to lose players or put on a poor performance because of the extra traveling and unfamiliar surroundings.
