Anyone who has ever been a fan of the New York Knicks has fantasized of, at a minimum, threatening Knicks owner James Dolan. However, for most of us, we realize that there are legal complications involved in doing so. Well, apparently that part of the fantasy didn't dawn upon a teenage fan who thought it would be a good idea to go online and threaten Dolan. As a result he's now been arrested and charged with a crime.
As if this season hasn't been hard enough to endure, one New York Knicks fans decided to make it an even harder year to forget. James Dolan isn't given enough credit as an owner of a professional sports team. Many say he's a terrible owner who doesn't care. That's definitely not true. To Dolan's credit, he has poured money into the team throughout the years. That's not something an owner who isn't hungry for a championship does.
Dolan's problem is that he's too hands-on and doesn't allow basketball people to make decisions and run the Knicks correctly. That being said, that doesn’t make it acceptable to wish harm on those running the franchise. Even if they've done a poor job. However, one New York teenager allegedly used the internet to do just that and now finds himself in legal trouble.
CBS New York reports the teen was taken seriously enough as a threat to Dolan to get arrested and charged with a crime.
As WCBS 880′s Irene Cornell reported Friday, 19-year-old John Giamella was arrested and hauled into court on a charge of aggravated harassment for allegedly making threats online against Dolan.
He said of the Knicks owner in his email postings, “it’s officially time to die — I really hate James Dolan.”
That's taking things too far. This is sports. People need to chill out and stop taking things so seriously. And when did our society become so numb to murder and death that it's become acceptable for a teenager to threaten a perfect stranger?
According to the article, Madison Square Garden's head of security not only discovered the threat but also found three photos where the teen was shown naked, holding a gun.
That's a bad combination. So of course Dolan is going to claim he fears for his safety. Of course he's going to claim he fears for the safety of fans in attendance at Madison Square Garden. Dolan has a very expensive legal team who isn't going to take this threat lightly or allow the teen to get off easy.
There's an old saying. Don't cross the boss. Dolan's decision making ability is easy to question. However, any true Knicks fan knows how Dolan deals with perceived threats. This kid doesn't stand a chance.
Quite frankly, he'll probably get what he deserves. Giamella shouldn't be threatening anybody. Let alone a billionaire owner of a sports franchise. Hopefully this will be a lesson to him to respect sports as entertainment and not something he should be threatening someone over. It's not that serious. That being said, many Knicks fans share Giamella's frustration and it would be nice if Dolan could deliver a champions to receive those feelings.
