As if the New York Knicks current five-game losing streak wasn’t bad enough, word came out today that forward Andrea Bargnani is out indefinitely with a torn ligament in his left elbow. With depth on the frontcourt already paper thin, Bargnani’s absence could sink the Knicks even further into oblivion.

The team announced Bargnani underwent an MRI that revealed the injury. The 7-footer injured his elbow with under two minutes remaining in the third quarter of Wednesday's game, according to the team. He took a hard spill on his left elbow during the game while trying to attempt a dunk.

What is worse is Bargnani hurt his elbow in this awful failed dunk attempt that has been going viral on social media. Here’s a clip of him trying to posterize a few Philadelphia 76ers in Wednesday night's game.

With injuries to Kenyon Martin and Amar’e Stoudemire already decimating the Knicks' frontcourt and Tyson Chandler no sure bet to stay healthy, this is just more injury to insult, if you will.

While not an aggressive, defensive minded player around the rim, Bargnani’s size at least was a plus and his absence is something the reeling Knicks could certainly do without. After all, he is the Knicks’ second-leading scorer with 13.3 points per game.

With Cole Aldrich and Jeremy Tyler the only other healthy big men, the Knicks could look elsewhere for some inside help. To say the Knicks frontcourt is barren is an understatement.

After being traded in the offseason from the Toronto Raptors, the move to the Knicks has not exactly been a graceful one for Bargnani, as his past issues (defense, rebounding) have not endeared him to the Knicks’ faithful. Now Bargnani has to deal with this issue that could sideline him a few weeks.

With the Knicks spiraling and the injuries mounting, this could doom the Knicks in their quest to get back into the playoffs.
