There are many New York Knicks fans who are worried about Carmelo Anthony's impending free agency. After next season Anthony can opt out of his contract and either renegotiate his contract with the Knicks or look for employment elsewhere. Then again, Anthony could also choose to play out his current contract. There is a large contingent of fans who simply can't see Anthony leaving Madison Square Garden behind. However, speculation has Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant as playing a large part in Anthony's decision.
Carmelo Anthony played it cool and didn't give any insight to his future while talking to reporters at the New York Knicks media day. However, that doesn't alleviate the elephant in the room. The fact is, the Knicks could lose the face of the franchise. Is it any wonder why the focus on winning a championship is now as compared to later?
It's not that Anthony's window is closing. He is currently in his prime and that prime wont last forever. Most importantly, however, if New York doesn't show they can compete for a title soon and often the Knicks may lose their window with Anthony.
The Knicks have between now and July 1 to prove to Anthony that they are building something resembling a contending team. A person familiar with Anthony’s thinking says that Kobe Bryant could be the X-factor in the Knicks’ negotiations with Carmelo. The Lakers will have cap space next summer and if Bryant promises Anthony that together they can make a run at a championship in Los Angeles, Dolan may be doomed.
Anthony owns a home in Southern California and his wife, La La, has spent a lot of time in Hollywood the last two years making movies.
Like it or not, the theory isn't the craziest one out there. Bryant is a multi-time champion and a long-time friend of Anthony's. In theory, if Bryant invites Anthony to Los Angeles to chase a title with him, the Knicks may lose their superstar to the West coast.
Then again, there's always the small detail of the $30 million he'd have to leave behind by signing with a team other than the Knicks. Players rarely leave money behind. However, Anthony would clearly make plenty of money as a Lakers player and would also make that much more if he were able to capture a championship.
That being said, it wouldn't measure up to what he'd gain if he were to ever win a title in New York. However, it's up to Anthony if he thinks the Knicks will ever be able to compete for a ring.
Eventually players need to put money on the back burner to chase a championship. Is Anthony at that point yet? You'd think that in his prime he'd rather remain the franchise player and pick his New York teammates in two season's when the team clears most of its salary off the books.
That being said, there's a few flaws to the Anthony to Los Angeles theory. First of all, Mike D'Antoni. Anthony didn't like playing for him in New York. He basically forced D'Antoni to leave. On top of that, there's Bryant himself. Bryant is a five-time NBA Champion, a two-time Finals MVP, an NBA Most Valuable Player, a 15-time All-Star and a two-time scoring champion.
He's a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame player and one of the best all-time players. However, he's also 35 years old and recovering from a ruptured achilles tendon. At his age, that's no joke. That injury is serious enough for anyone of any age. However, it's very likely that Bryant is on the down-side just based on his age let alone his injury. When you combine the two, it could be a bad story.
Those are all things Anthony will have to consider while thinking of leaving his throne behind at Madison Square Garden. What will be the result? No one really knows. However, the chances are that Anthony will retire in a Knicks uniform. However, crazier things have happened.
