In the never-ending war of words between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, the latest feud has the Nets' newest addition Paul Pierce firing back at words J.R. Smith, for something Smith earlier said about Pierce.

What exactly did Pierce say this time in response to Smith?

“Who?”

Smith had recently said Pierce was “bitter” for playing in Boston his whole career. So, Paul Pierce played the “who?” game from there.

From Mike Mazzeo of ESPNNewYork.com:

Brooklyn Nets forward Paul Pierce would care that New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith called him "bitter" — if Pierce knew who Smith was.

"Who? Who?" Pierce repeated Thursday when asked about Smith's comments.

Asked again, Pierce said, "Who? Exactly. Who? Who are we talking about right now? Exactly. Who are we talking about? We are talking about nothing."

Obviously there is no love lost for New York when you’re talking about Paul Pierce, and for that matter Kevin Garnett. These longtime Celtics have harbored some resentment (warranted or not) for the New York Knicks, and now they will be playing their games in New York as part of the Nets. Pierce then started to hype his Nets as the team of New York, something for which Raymond Felton and Smith did not take kindly to.

We have talked about this budding rivalry for some time here and the blogosphere loves this back and forth banter, as it ignites the rivalry even more. When there is no games to be played, all you get is this idle offseason chatter.

The mercurial Smith is a lightning rod for controversy and you just knew his over-the-top remarks wouldn't sit well with Pierce. It’s just not in their (Smith and Pierce) DNA to remain silent.

Suffice to say, all this talk will be a good buildup until the teams finally play a regular season game. The first matchup is scheduled for Thursday, December 5 at the Barclays Center.
