In truly a bizarre series of events, NBA Commissioner David Stern reportedly had a sit-down chat with New York Knicks owner James Dolan and Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov this past year about the rising tensions between the two city teams.
Stern essentially said 'chill out'!
“There was such a meeting and the parties both said it was a very cordial and pleasant one,” said one league official with knowledge of the sit-down, which happened early in the season.
Stern wanted the two owners to be on the same page and wanted the two of them to harbor no animosity towards each other any longer. The two had been known for exchanging various barbs at each other ever since the eccentric Prokhorov became the Nets owner.
According the post, Prokhorov means no ill will towards the Knicks and he thinks the rivalry is good for the city.
Also from Kerber:
One source maintained Prokhorov stokes the rivalry fires because he believes the feud “is great for both teams” and insisted it is “not at all personal” against Dolan, the Garden chairman and Cablevision CEO.
Wow, this rivalry is suddenly reaching heightening and ridiculous levels—but you got to love it. We knew players such as Paul Pierce and Raymond Felton were good at pouring gasoline on the fire, but now we got owners being told to play nice.
With the two teams set to co-host the 2015 All-Star game, they should learn to coexist in a cordial way.
Regardless, this is great fodder for blogs, talk radio and the like, as this rivalry will be fun to watch unfold in the next couple of years.
