Jared Zwerling tweets that NBA 2K14 has preset the Knicks' starting lineup to have Raymond Felton at point guard, Iman Shumpert at shooting guard, Carmelo Anthony at small forward, Andrea Bargnani at power forward and Tyson Chandler at center.
Felton and Chandler aren't surprises, but 2K14's decision to put Anthony at small forward is interesting considering the team's offseason signing of Metta World Peace. Anthony isn't really your prototypical power forward, but a lineup with him there would feature more defense if World Peace can produce the way everyone expects him to.
Sure, the lineup proposed by 2K14 is a valid option for Woodson to pursue at times during the regular season, but what's great about his roster is the versatility. Shumpert can play the 2 and the 3; Anthony can play the 3 and the 4; Pablo Prigioni can play the 1 and the 2; Bargnani can play the 4 and even the 5 in an emergency. Simply put, Woodson can do a lot with his team.
When J.R. Smith is ready to go, the lineup stands to change again. Smith, the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2012-13, could potentially start if Woodson wants to infuse even more offense into the starting lineup. But, for now, Woodson has to live with either Prigioni or Shumpert at the 2.
A lineup with Felton and Shumpert in the backcourt seems likely at this point, but the biggest debate is still deciding as to which forward position Anthony should play. If he plays the 4, World Peace can play the 3. Again, this would provide the most defense with Shumpert and World Peace on the court at the same time.
Bargnani, Amar'e Stoudemire and Jeremy Tyler would then be the big men off the bench, but it's unclear as to how much playing time Tyler will see in his first season with the Knicks.
The 2K Sports franchise has always done a decent job with predicting the starting lineups of professional sports teams, so it will be interesting to see if Woodson chooses to go with the same lineup during the regular season. If nothing else, expect this lineup to be used a few times here or there. Versatility will be a good friend for the Knicks in 2013-14.
