The New York Knicks officially announced on Thursday afternoon that they have re-signed Kenyon Martin to a one-year, veterans-minimum deal of $1.4 million.

Martin, who was signed late into the 2012-13 season, became a featured member of the Knicks rotation last season and gave the team some much-needed punch and bravado down the stretch. Primarily used for defense, Martin meshed well with the Knicks and proved to be a formidable body guard of sorts for Carmelo Anthony and others.

In 18 games with the Knicks last season, Martin averaged 7.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. For his career, the former No. 1 pick, has averaged 12.8 points, 7 rebounds while shooting a solid 48.2 percent from the field.

Martin is as psychical as they come and that is a trait the Knicks will need as they get set to battle with the likes of Kevin Garnett, Brook Lopez, Roy Hibbert, David West, Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer in the rugged Eastern Conference.

When the Knicks traded for Andrea Bargnani, while still having Amar’e Stoudemire on the roster, they needed someone who can battle under the boards fearlessly and give this team an identity of one that is not soft.

When you combine Martin with the recently-acquired Metta World Peace, and not to mention Tyson Chandler, many teams will be hesitant to take it to hole with this group of bangers and intimidators.

So while Martin is not the gifted athlete he once was—especially on the offensive sides of things—he still gives max effort and should be a valuable member of the Knicks’ rotation this season.

After some unfinished business last season, Martin is right back where he belongs with the Knicks.
