It appears as though the New York Jets have their sights set on a replacement for Ben Kotwica, who left the team to become the special teams coordinator for the Washington Redskins. Kotwica stepped into the role of special teams coordinator after Mike Westhoff retired. The Jets are reportedly targeting Thomas McGaughey of LSU as their next special teams coordinator. The Jets have stated that they are in no rush to fill the position, the only major position on the coaching staff open at this point.

The New York Jets are a special teams coordinator away from locking down the major positions on their coaching staff, but claim to be in no rush to find a replacement for Ben Kotwica. While the Jets assistant coaches were waiting on new deals, Kotwica ended up bolting to the Washington Redskins. While every NFL head coach realizes the importance of special teams, it is a core element to Rex Ryan's blueprint to a successful team. This is an important hire for the team heading into the 2014 season. reports that Thomas McGaughey "has emerged as a strong candidate" for the Jets. McGaughey has NFL experience as the assistant special teams coordinator with the New York Giants from 2007-2010. He then became the special teams coordinator at LSU. LSU has been known for aggressive, productive special teams during the tenure of head coach Les Miles and Thomas McGaughey has played a major role.

The Jets were up and down on special teams in 2013, after a very similar season in 2012 under Mike Westhoff. The team needs a coordinator to breathe new life into the special teams and get back to the playmaking units we saw early on in Rex Ryan's tenure. At this point Thomas McGaughey appears to be the top candidate for the job.
