New York Jets’ Muhammad Wilkerson Snubbed: No 2014 Pro Bowl Selections for Team

It hasn't been a banner season season for the New York Jets and that was emphasized once more with the announcement of the selections to this season's Pro Bowl. The Jets didn't place any players in the Pro Bowl this season, with defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson standing out as the biggest snub. Sheldon Richardson could also be argued as deserving of the honor, as well as kicker Nick Folk. The snubbed Jets still have a shot at attending the Pro Bowl if the playoffs prevent selected players from attending.

The 2014 Pro Bowl will use a different format, as the players won't be split up into AFC and NFC rosters. There is one pool of players which will be drafted to separate teams by either Jerry Rice or Deion Sanders. The Pro Bowl is set to be without any New York Jets players right now, as the Jets didn't produce any 2014 Pro Bowl selections.

The most notable oversight is defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson. Wilkerson has posted 10.5 sacks so far in a defensive system that doesn't usually see defensive ends post huge numbers. Some of the defensive ends chosen ahead of him play in systems designed to produce major sack numbers by the team's defensive ends, with marginally better numbers. Mario Williams of the Buffalo Bills was selected over Muhammad Wilkerson, likely because he has 13 sacks on the season. Williams has 34 total tackles and a forced fumble on the season. Wilkerson has 62 total tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan did his best to lobby for Muhammad Wilkerson to make the Pro Bowl:

"I would be shocked if he isn’t on that list," Ryan said Friday during his press conference. "Obviously, if Mo doesn’t make it, I don’t get it. It [will be] personal, somebody doesn’t like Mo Wilkerson for some reason."

Nick Folk also has an interesting case, having missed just two field goals all season. Folk has made 93.9 percent of his field goals, with both of his misses coming from over 40 yards. He is second in the NFL in field goal percentage.

Muhammad Wilkerson and the other Jets hopefuls will have to wait for players to drop out due to injury or the playoffs for a shot at deserved recognition. The Jets are joined by the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars as teams without 2014 Pro Bowl selections.
