Despite that Christmas fell in the middle of the week, the New York Jets utilized the time prior to the holiday to vote for their fellow teammates for 2013 team awards. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was named the team most valuable player (MVP) for the current season.
Now in his third full season with the New York Jets, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson has really come into his own as far as his play along the line, making tackles, sacking quarterbacks and knocking down passes. He and linebacker Calvin Pace are the first Jets teammates to have double digit sack totals in the same season, with Wilkerson at 10 and 1/2 for the season going into the final game in Miami. The line has now become the core of the defense with the fact that the three starters, and key backup Kenrick Ellis, have been drafted, or signed as undrafted free agent in the case of "Snacks" Damon Harrison, in the past three seasons. Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson is a certain rookie of the year candidate as well. The leader of the line is the veteran from Temple in the 2011 NFL Draft, Mo Wilkerson, and that leadership and solid play could lead to him making the Pro Bowl roster for the AFC after the season.
On being recognized by his teammates as the Curtis Martin Team MVP, Wilkerson was quoted as saying…
"It’s great. That’s an accomplishment that I feel that I think I worked hard for, but I want to celebrate this award with my teammates. I wouldn’t have it if it wasn’t for them."
Here are the players for the Jets who won team awards for 2013:
Team MVP (Curtis Martin award): Muhammad Wilkerson
Most Inspirational (Dennis Byrd award): Demario Davis
Good Guy (Kyle Clifton award): Nick Folk
Community Service (Marty Lyons award): Kyle Wilson

Congratulations to all the New York Jets players who won awards, and most especially MVP Muhammad Wilkerson. Now the team can turn its focus onto it's final game versus the Miami Dolphins and possibly playing the role of spoiler for their playoff chances.
