At 5-4, the New York Jets have already exceeded the expectations of many people. In what has been labeled as a rebuilding year, they have shown they might be legitimate playoff contenders and can compete with some of the NFL’s best teams. As they head into their bye week, Jets Nation has reasons to believe their favorite team can extend their season.
What if I told you that the Jets have a chance of finishing 12-4? It sounds like a difficult task and looks like a long shot, but it is very possible. The Jets’ remaining schedule does not appear to be that tough, and they are very capable of winning all seven games left. In fact, only one team down the road, the Carolina Panthers, has a winning record right now. The Jets have shown they can win big games and get the job done with thin talent at certain positions, mainly at wide receiver and tight end.
The challenge for the Jets from now until the last week of the regular season is to put an end to their trend of alternating wins and losses. If they can learn to play well consistently every week, they could be in for a great march to the playoffs. These last seven games will show what this team is all about. With cold weather on the way and every other team they will face also fighting for a playoff berth, the pressure will be on and the stakes will be higher every week, especially with three more divisional contests left. This is a young team that has seen a small sample of big games. Now, they will get a taste of what will feel like a playoff atmosphere in their last seven games.
How can the Jets go on a great run and punch a ticket into the playoffs? It will be a complete team effort. Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, and Sheldon Richardson, along with the linebackers, will have to continue to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines the way they have all season and make big stops. Marty Mornhinweg has been doing very well with his play calling and helping Geno Smith adjust to the professional level. As long as Mornhinweg continues to construct an offense that can move effectively and Smith takes the time to learn how to enhance the skills he already has, the offense that is already strong in the ground can make things interesting in the air.
In addition, the secondary must use this bye week to take a look at what has been beating them all season long and learn from that come back better than ever when they return to practice. The rushing attack should keep doing what they have been doing all season long because they do it well and are constantly able to get an upper hand on their opponents. The Jets should relax on Sunday, especially after a hard-fought victory. As much as there is nothing wrong with clearing your mind from football on your week off, it does not hurt to watch next week's games and see what other teams are doing.
As mentioned, Gang Green's remaining schedule is not that tough compared to what they have already encountered. Some of these teams like the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders can pull off big wins but do not match up that well against the Jets on paper. There are also teams like the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens who are struggling to find out what teams they are and have hit some big bumps in the road this season. Then there is a team like the Panthers who are on fire with a four-game winning streak but beatable. All of these teams are also trying to punch a ticket into the postseason and have had ups and downs like the Jets have had in 2013.
There is a cliché that says all things are possible. It is very possible for the Jets to reach the playoffs. Running the table and winning all of their remaining regular season games may not be as possible, but they have a realistic chance of doing so. There will be obstacles along the way, but Gang Green's race to the playoffs will be all about jumping over those hurdles. Either way, the Jets have a chance to give their fans something to be very proud of and stick it to the critics.
