The New York Jets are set for a very difficult matchup with the New Orleans Saints this weekend, and will enter that game without some of their offensive firepower. Jeff Cumberland is out this Sunday with a concussion suffered last week against the Cincinnati Bengals and Santonio Holmes is listed as doubtful. Kellen Winslow, Jr. is suspended, leaving the Jets especially shorthanded. Without much hope of keeping pace offensively, the pressure is mounting on a Jets defense that was shredded by Andy Dalton this past weekend.
The disparity between the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints offenses was clear before injuries took their toll, but now the gap has widened. The Saints have a bevy of weapons at the disposal of Drew Brees, chief among them being tight end Jimmy Graham. The Jets trot out rookie quarterback Geno Smith, without Santonio Holmes, Jeff Cumberland or Kellen Winslow, Jr., meaning his only available tight ends are Konrad Reuland and Zach Sudfeld.
Jeff Cumberland suffered a concussion during the 49-9 drubbing the Jets endured at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals last week. Santonio Holmes is still recovering from a hamstring injury, which it now appears will keep him out until after the team's bye week. That will put the burden on the offensive line and running backs to take pressure off of Geno Smith. The Jets will need to control the football and eat some clock in order to keep Drew Brees on the sideline as long as possible in order avoid getting into a shootout.
On paper this looks like an extremely tough matchup for the Jets, especially after their secondary was lit up by the Bengals. Then again, on paper, the Jets were expected to play a good game against Cincinnati after a big win over the New England Patriots. This is the kind of game that this Jets team tends to make competitive when they are expected to be outclassed.
