On Sunday the New York Jets (4-3) traveled to the Queen City to play the Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) in the hopes of breaking their win one, lose one pattern formed over the first seven games. The only player that seemed to show up was Nick Folk, making three 45+ yard field goals in a losing effort, 49-9, as Andy Dalton and the Bengals made many long yardage plays themselves.
While the Jets won very little on this day, they did win the coin toss but deferred until the second half. The Bengals moved the ball well on their opening drive and a pass interference penalty on Antonio Cromartie set them up on the nine yard line. Andy Dalton to Marvin Jones for the opening touchdown, Bengals 7-0. The Jets went three and out and punted back to Cincy. They drove down again and Dalton found his tight end Gresham open in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0. Geno Smith found an open Bilal Powell in the left flat that gained 17 yards on a third and 13 play on the Jets next drive, but Reggie Nelson recorded his second sack of Smith to end the drive. On the Bengals next drive Dalton found A.J. Green for 53 yards to set them up at the Jets 11 yard line.
Bernard appeared to fumble trying to dive for the pylon and it was ruled a touchback but the play was reviewed and his knee was down at the one and a half yard line. The Jets defense held on four downs hoping to swing momentum back their way, but the offense went three and out. On the Bengals next possession Muhammad Wilkerson picked Dalton by batting the ball, that Sheldon Richardson tipped back to Mo. Geno Smith targeted David Nelson on consecutive passes on second and third down and Nick Folk made a 45-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-3. When the Bengals got the ball back, Dalton continued to rip apart the Jets secondary on a 45-yard catch and run to Jones. A few plays later he found Jones again for the touchdown, making it 21-3. Smith found Nelson again for 26 yards that he utilized some nice spin moves to help gain that much. Several runs by Powell and Chris Ivory plus passes to Jeff Cumberland and Jeremy Kerley and the drive ended in another Folk field goal of 47 yards. Brandon Tate returned the subsequent kickoff to the Jets 29 yard line and Dalton found Jones again for another touchdown to make it 28-6 at the half.
Geno Smith was picked off by Chris Crocker, early in the drive, who returned it 32 yards for another score, making it 35-6. Two drives later for the Jets were aided by a Bengals pass interference penalt,y then consecutive completions to Stephen Hill for another first down. Zach Sudfeld got his first catch, and Smith found Nelson again for 19 yards a few plays later. Nick Folk made a season long 50-yard field goal to make the score 35-9. Dalton answered on the following drive for Cincy with another 53-yard pass play to Green to set them up as first and goal to go. Dalton threw his fourth touchdown pass to Marvin Jones to make it 42-9.
Geno Smith tried to get the Jets moving but after a 14-yard pass play to Kerley he was intercepted once again, this time by Adam Jones, who also ran it back for a touchdown. The Jets coaches decided it would be best to pull Smith, so as to not shake his confidence further, and replaced him with Matt Simms for the remainder of the game. The only play of note was a fourth down and 11 play that Simms ran for 10-plus yards and almost hurdled for the needed amount to give them a first down.
This coming Sunday the New York Jets will return home to play the New Orleans Saints before their bye week. It will be another test for the Jets playing a talented, well above .500 team and maybe they can pull off another win to continue their win one, lose one streak and not lose two consecutive games.
