The New York Jets limped out of their game with the Pittsburgh Steelers with more players injured and two of them, Mike Goodson and Clyde Gates, landed on season-ending injured reserve. Since both were key to the kickoff return game, the Jets made the move to sign wide receiver and kick return specialist Josh Cribbs.
For the New York Jets, injuries have started taking their toll on the talent on offense, like wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who will likely be sitting out another one to two games. Mike Goodson had just returned from his four game suspension only to be hurt late in the game on Sunday versus the Steelers as he attempted to tackle Lawrence Timmons, after Timmons picked off Geno Smith. Goodson tore both the ACL and MCL in his left knee on the tackle that also saw rookie guard Brian Winters collide with Goodson. Wide receiver Clyde Gates had five receptions for 36 yards on Sunday, but left the game holding his hand after trying to make a catch on sharply thrown ball by Smith. The non-contact injury is something that with several weeks rest he likely could have returned to play from, but the Jets decided his inconsistent play coupled with the injury were reason enough to shut him down for the rest of 2013.
Now, since both Gates and Goodson were the two main kickoff return specialists on the roster, the Jets needed to look outside the organization for someone healthy enough to return kicks. Josh Cribbs, who had worked out for the team the week before, was signed to replace them and add depth to the receiving corps. Also, wide receiver Greg Salas, who had been on the Eagles practice squad, was signed to give Geno Smith another new target to acclimate himself to. With moves like this, everybody needs to grab a Gang Green t-shirt to bring the team good luck this week.
Kellen Winslow's suspension doesn't help his rookie quarterback, who had found a comfort level with the veteran tight end in the first five games of the season. Now Marty Mornhinweg must take these two new pieces of the offensive puzzle and plug them in under an accelerated learning environment to hopefully contribute successfully as the Jets will be home Sunday to battle the New England Patriots.
