After a thrilling victory on Monday night, the New York Jets return to MetLife Stadium to host the struggling Pittsburgh Steelers. This week six matchup has many people. By completing a few tasks, the Jets will find themselves standing at 4-2 when the clock strikes zero.
Bully Big Ben: Ben Roethlisberger has been having by far the worst season of his career. The Steelers’ offense just is not clicking, and Roethlisberger has not been playing as well as he usually does. In addition, he has made numerous bad throws and mental errors. Muhammad Wilkerson, Damon Harrison, and Sheldon Richardson, along with some help from the outside linebackers on blitzing plays, will have to bring the pain to Big Ben and make it a miserable day for him.
Unleash the three-headed monster: With Mike Goodson showing positive signs on Monday against the Atlanta Falcons, Marty Mornhinweg can now unleash the three-headed monster in the backfield that he has been trying to create. Each halfback has his own strength. The offense should be able to wear Pittsburgh’s defense out by running the ball and letting Geno Smith throw short passes to Goodson, Bilal Powell, and Chris Ivory. The backfield has been progressing every week, and this week should be no different if they continue to attack on the ground the way they have been lately.
Avoid turnovers and penalties: The Jets did not give the ball away against the Falcons, and they were disciplined in penalties compared to the previous two games. That helped them in their 30-28 victory. They will have to do that again and not give the Steelers any chance to win. Great discipline combined with great play will lead the Jets to an easy victory.
Encore from Geno: Geno Smith had a terrific game against the Falcons on Monday night. In fact, he had such a terrific game that he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. Smith will have to do that again when he faces the Steelers’ defense. This means he must make big throws downfield, read the defense carefully before making a final decision when attempting to pass the ball, and run for yards if he has no receivers open.
Get the home crowd involved: With the Jets actually being favored to win this game, the fans at MetLife Stadium will be loud and energetic. Gang Green should be getting the crowd to make noise all day and make it a very tough environment for the Steelers. Pumping up the Jets fans in attendance could make it so loud that it could cause communication issues for Pittsburgh as well as false starts and delay of game penalties. Playing very well will get the Jets a victory, but having their fans being loud and proud will set the tone for a confident team.
On paper, the momentum swings heavily in favor of the Jets. If Gang Green can play 60 minutes of aggressive football and steer clear of crucial mistakes, they will emerge victorious and set up an interesting matchup next week against the New England Patriots.
