On Monday night the New York Jets (2-2) traveled to Atlanta (1-3) for the first time in eight years, and with most pundits saying the Falcons needed the victory more, the Jets came back again late to win 30-28 on a Nick Folk 44-yard field goal. Now the Jets will return home to face the reeling Steelers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Antonio Allen blocked the punt on the opening drive by the Falcons. Mike Goodson caught his first pass as a Jet making a first down on a third down and two yard play. Geno Smith targeted Jeff Cumberland on a third down slant pass that went off his hands then the defender's, then back to Cumberland, putting them in the red zone. The Jets play call came in late on fourth down and one yard to go, Nick Folk made the 22-yard field goal to opening the scoring.
A Matt Ryan shovel pass to Jason Snelling gave the Falcons a touchdown on a long drive that started with about five and a half minutes to go in the first quarter to put the Falcons up, 7-3. To start the next drive, a direct snap to Goodson went for 24 yards. Then on a third down and nine yard play, Smith found Jeremy Kerley to just inside the 20 of Atlanta. On third and 11 Smith found, Cumberland for the touchdown to put the Jets up 10-7. Sheldon Richardson ended the next drive by sacking Matt Ryan. On the following drive, Smith found Cumberland in the seam for 47 yards. Then he found Kerley at the 11 yard and he ran it in, hitting the right pylon. The Jets were now up 17-7. Just before the half the Falcons elected to go for it on fourth and goal and the Jets drew a pass interference penalty. On the final play the Falcons tried to run it in, but the Jets defense held.
After the Jets punted to end their opening drive of the second half, the Falcons got good field position around midfield. They eventually scored as Rodgers ran it in from the four yard line. The lead was cut to 17-14. The Jets punted again and as the Falcons were driving, Muhammad Wilkerson knocked the ball from Ryan's hand and Leger Douzable recovered setting them up inside the Atlanta 30 yard line. A sack drove the Jets back, but Smith gained some of it back with his own legs. Folk connected from 36 yards to make it 20-14.
After the Falcons punted, Jeremy Kerley ran it back into Falcons territory where he was horse-collar tackled by the punter, tacking on 15 yards to set up the Jets deep at the 23 yard line. Chris Ivory then exploded for a nice run to just inside the five yard line. On third and goal they went "jumbo" with Vlad Ducasse in and Sheldon Richardson as the fullback. Smith hit Kellen Winslow who tip-toed it in in the back corner to make it 27-14. The Falcons drove and Rodgers ran it in from 19 yards out on a draw play to make it 27-21. Osi Umenyiora sacked Geno Smith again, forcing the Jets into third and long. Ryan found Julio Jones with Antonio Cromartie draped over him, but he made a spectacular one handed catch for 46 yards. Eventually Ryan found the back-up tight end Toilolo for the go ahead score, 28-27, just after the two minute warning. Smith moved the Jets down the field starting at 1:54 to Stephen Hill who fought for a first down. Then a slant to Kerley and another near first down to Hill. Smith ran for the first down himself and six more yards. A slant pass to Clyde Gates to the 30 yard line, then Bilal Powell ran for the the first down. Rex Ryan took a timeout with three seconds left. Nick Folk made the 44-yard attempt to give the Jets the victory 30-28.
Geno Smith went without a turnover for the first time all season, which definitely helped the Jets cause. The defense got some turnovers although one went right back to the Falcons on their opening scoring drive. Hopefully with even more of the playbook being opened to Geno Smith, as Marty Mornhinweg dialed up many different formations and personnel packages, the Jets can continue to have solid games like this going forward.
