New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is done for the 2013 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder today. It almost certainly signals the end of his career with the Jets and his future in the NFL is cloudy at best. Mark Sanchez suffered a torn labrum in the third preseason game against the New York Giants. The injury clinched the quarterback competition and Geno Smith has led the Jets to a 3-2 start to the season.
The Jets announced today that Mark Sanchez elected to have surgery after seven weeks of surgery based on the advice of the renowned Dr. James Andrews. Dr. Andrews performed the surgery today, which effectively end Mark Sanchez's season. It also likely signals the end of his time with the team that drafted him No. 5 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft.
When Mark Sanchez was placed on injured reserve he was given the "designated to return" tag, which meant he could be eligible for the Week 9. At that point the Jets were still unsure about what they would get from Geno Smith and there was talk that Sanchez could return and even start later in the year.
Whether purely a medical decision or a combination of that and the writing on the wall given the play of Geno Smith, don't expect Mark Sanchez to take another snap in green and white. Having surgery now will give him a chance to repair the injury, rehab and get into football shape once again to workout for teams this offseason.
The former first round pick will almost certainly land in a new city next season. He will bring along a resume that includes four playoff wins, but also 69 career interceptions to go along with 68 touchdowns. Mark Sanchez showed tantalizing signs of making good on his potential, but inconsistency derailed his career and this injury put the finishing touches on his time with the Jets.
