The New York Jets and New England Patriots share a rivalry intensified by familiarity, with coaches and players swapping sides year in and year out to add additional layers to the drama. The most recent player to switch sides in the bitter AFC East rivalry is tight end Zach Sudfeld. Sudfeld latched on with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent this year but was placed on waivers to make room for the addition of Austin Collie. The Jets released linebacker Scott Solomon to open up a roster spot.

The New York Jets need depth at tight end and wide receiver, which they have addressed this week with the additions of David Nelson and Zach Sudfeld. Zach Sudfeld spent the first four weeks with the New England Patriots after making the roster as an undrafted free agent out of Nevada. He showed the potential to be a very good receiving tight end during the preseason but hasn't recorded a catch in the regular season.
The Jets need the depth. With the receiving corps thinning due to injuries suffered by Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill, the tight ends will be asked to shoulder a heavier load. With Jeff Cumberland and Kellen Winslow both having durability issues in the past, the Jets can't afford to remain thin at that position as well.
The benefits of the recent additions of David Nelson and Zach Sudfeld might not be felt immediately. It will likely take time for them to carve out a true role in the offense and build a connection with Geno Smith. In the meantime, players like Jeremy Kerley, Clyde Gates, Jeff Cumberland and Kellen Winslow, Jr. will have to step up.
