After playing three tight games to start the season at 2-1, the New York Jets put together a brutal effort at LP Field against the Tennessee Titans today in a 38-13 blowout loss. Rookie quarterback Geno Smith continues to have issues with ball security, with two fumbles and two interceptions today. Former Jets defensive lineman Ropati Pitoitua had two sacks of Geno Smith.
Things went downhill for the Jets pretty quickly, with Geno Smith throwing the first of his two interceptions to Alterraun Verner on the second play of the team's first possession. Just five plays later, Jake Locker found Delanie Walker for a one yard touchdown to give the Titans a 7-0 lead. Rob Bironas added a 26-yard field goal with 4:20 left in the first quarter to give Tennessee a 10-0 lead.
The Jets got on the board on the first play of the second quarter, a 45-yard Nick Folk field goal. A fumble by Geno Smith set up another short field for the Titans, which resulted in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jake Locker to Nate Washington. The Jets were able to cut the lead to 17-6 with a 47-yard field goal from Nick Folk, but with two seconds left in the first half Justin Hunter hauled in a 16-yard touchdown to pushed the score to 24-6 at halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless, but the fourth quarter was disastrous. The Jets were stopped on fourth down at the Tennessee 40 yard line, but the Jets defense forced the Titans to go three-and-out. Geno Smith was sacked by Karl Klug on the first play of the next possession, and while being sacked he tried to switch the ball into his left hand behind his back. He fumbled the football and Klug recovered for a Titans touchdown.
At 31-6, the game was well out of reach. Geno Smith did respond on the next drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cumberland. On the ensuing Tennessee possession, Ryan Fitzpatrick hit Nate Washington for a 77-yard touchdown to end the day's scoring. Fitzpatrick replaced Jake Locker, who was carted off the field with an injury.
In the end, turnovers destroyed any chance the Jets had of winning. All four of Geno Smith's turnovers led to Titans touchdowns.
