The New York Jets showed flashes of excellence against the Buffalo Bills today in their win at MetLife Stadium, but penalties and turnovers helped keep the game close through the final whistle. Geno Smith threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions as his individual performance ended up being a reflection of the team's overall effort. The Jets defense piled up eight sacks of EJ Manuel. The Jets are now 2-1, 1-1 in the AFC East three weeks into the 2013 NFL regular season.
The Jets scored on the opening possession of the game, with three third down conversions contributing to an 80-yard drive that was capped by an 8-yard Geno Smith touchdown run. The teams traded punts until early in the first quarter when the Bills got on the scoreboard via a 37-yard field goal from Dan Carpenter. Geno Smith threw an interception on the next offensive snap for the Jets, giving Buffalo the ball at the New York 21 yard line. The Jets defense held the Bills to another field goal.
Geno Smith responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Hill on the very next drive to push the lead to 14-6. The Jets added a 47-yard field goal from Nick Folk as time expired in the first half to extend the lead to 17-6.
The Jets tacked on another field goal early in the third quarter, but the Bills responded with two more field goals from Dan Carpenter – one set up by another interception of Geno Smith. Buffalo finally found the end zone on their first drive of the fourth quarter and tacked on a two-point conversion, tying the game at 20. EJ Manuel found Scott Chandler for a 33-yard touchdown.
The Jets wasted little time responding. After a defensive penalty gave the Jets a first down, an illegal shift pushed them back into a first down and 15 situation on their own 31 yard line. Geno Smith found Santonio Holmes for a 69-yard touchdown that proved to be the winning score.
While the Jets will certainly take the win, they have plenty to clean up. New York lost the turnover battle, with the Bills intercepting Geno Smith twice. The Jets defense limited the damage but if the offense continues to put them in bad situation it will cost the team games over the course of the season. The Jets also racked up 20 penalties for an unmanageable 168 yards.
The Jets will now travel to Nashville, Tennessee to face Shonn Greene and the Tennessee Titans. The Titans are also 2-1 after beating the San Diego Chargers 20-17 today.
