The New York Jets are turning 53 years old during the 2013 season and while a few years ago they brought back their original New York Titans uniforms as throwbacks, we ponder if the teams needs a slight identity change with either a new alternate uniform or new uniforms altogether. The current look of hunter green and white has been in use since it debuted in 1998 under coach Bill Parcells.
Since the New York Titans (1960-62) became the New York Jets in 1963, 50 years ago, the current set of uniforms that started to be used in 1998 are now 15 years old, and the second longest version of the uniforms in the team's 53 year history. The Jets logo that debuted in 1978 on the kelly green helmet lasted until 1997 with only one minor change, the adding of black pinstriping and accents such as the black logo border and black facemask on the helmet, was basically used for 20 years.
Throwbacks uniforms have been the rage in the NFL for the past decade or so and around the 50th anniversary of the AFL the Jets added the white Titans throwback to the navy blue they had debuted a few years prior. There is nothing wrong with any team celebrating their history, well except may be the Philadelphia Eagles yellow and light blue throwbacks that were fortunately only used once. We are sure many fans have an opinion on which jerseys in Jets history they prefer, the current ones, the ones with the green helmet, or those going back to the Joe Namath days.
Do a Google search of Jets jerseys and you see the entire history going back to the silhouette Jet with the letters spelling out "Jets" inside of it on the helmet that was the team's first logo as the New York Jets to the current logo and uniform combinations that include white jersey and pants, green jersey and pants, and when they wear them opposite to that. A preferred alternate jersey could include an additional color, say charcoal gray or even adding black again, that would make the green and white stand out even more.
Whatever uniforms you prefer, let us know, since NFL teams have to submit any changes, or new designs to the league a few seasons prior to them being implemented. So even if the Jets submitted anything this year fans would not be able to see the new design(s) for several years. Once new uniforms are approved they have to be worn for a minimum of five seasons before changes can be made again, so they had better be something approved by the majority of the team and fans.
