The infamous "Butt Fumble" became a microcosm of the 2012 New York Jets season. As the team hosted the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving night, Mark Sanchez took off running on a broken play and sprinted full speed into the backside of Brandon Moore. Brandon Moore was actually doing a good job working against Vince Wilfork, but became a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. ESPN finally decided to retire the play last week after a long run as the reigning champion for the worst play in all of sports.
The New York Jets suffered through a brutal 2012 season, with plenty of games and plays they would like to forget. Out of all the miscues from their 6-10 season, the infamous "Butt Fumble" became the hallmark of their lost year. Played over and over again on ESPN, posted all over social networking sites, there was no escaping the broken play that the Patriots scooped up and returned for a touchdown.
Mark Sanchez being the main player involved certainly didn't help. As he struggled through his fourth NFL season, there were calls for his ouster despite the lack of true competition behind him on the depth chart. When a colossally bad play directly involved him, detractors and fed up Jets fans alike latched on.
Last week, SportsCenter finally decided to retire the Butt Fumble. No longer will Jets fans have to cringe when the Not Top 10 comes on, knowing that the painful clip of Mark Sanchez running full speed into Brandon Moore is on its way.
With all of the attention the Jets garner, and such a disjointed play resulting in a fumble returned for a touchdown by their bitter rivals, it's no surprise that the play ended up evolving into a cultural phenomenon. The play is still constantly referenced and serves as the benchmark for horrible plays. Even though it has been retired from the Not Top Plays segment on SportsCenter, don't expect the play to be forgotten anytime soon. It is truly the worst of the worst.
