The New York Jets were the first to kickoff week two of the NFL season early on Thursday night when they visited the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, sloppy play on both sides led to a low scoring, close game that the Jets came close to capturing, but eventually lost 13-10 after Geno Smith tossed several interceptions late in the game.
The New York Jets won the coin toss again and deferred. The Patriots took the opening kickoff down and scored on a play fake that the Jets defense bit hard on as Tom Brady hit a wide open Aaron Dobson for a 39-yard touchdown pass. After the teams traded punts, Geno Smith found Stephen Hill on a nice 33-yard pass play that Aqib Talib caused Hill to fumble and Devin McCourty brought back inside the 10 yard line. The Jets defense held them to a Stephen Gostkowski 21-yard field goal to make it 10-0 Patriots. On a third down and long play, Smith found Santonio Holmes near midfield and then the Jets got 15 more yards on the late hit by Chandler Jones on Smith. Chris Ivory had several good runs on the drive. On third down Smith, moving all over the field, connected with Clyde Gates for an apparent touchdown but the ball squirted out of Gates' hands and was overturned on replay. Nick Folk hit a 37-yard field goal, after a hold on Konrad Reuland had backed it up, to cut the lead to 10-3.
On Ryan Allen's first punt of this quarter the Jets did not have any returner back, something that would happen several more times in the game. It was either to prevent Kyle Wilson from fumbling or to put more pressure on the rookie punter. Damon Harrison dropped Stevan Ridley for a four yard loss during the period. The Patriots drove and with just over five minutes left in the half extended the lead with a 30-yard Gostkowski field goal, to 13-3. Geno Smith was also sacked three times in this quarter, showing the timing in his head to get rid of the ball is not quite there yet.
As heavy rain started just before the end of halftime, the Jets started to drive and on a third and three play Geno Smith found Clyde Gates to move to around the Patriots 40 yard line, but the drive stalled. Austin Howard came out a play later, Brian Winters came in at left guard, and Vlad Ducasse moved over to right tackle. Howard returned the next series but gave up a sack on Smith, who ran for a first down on the next play. Nice passes to Santonio Holmes along the right sideline and Bilal Powell in the left flat helped move them into the red zone. Powell ran in for the touchdown to cut the lead to 13-10. Leger Douzable and Garrett McIntyre teamed up on the first sack of Tom Brady.
Smith completed a pass to Holmes coming across the middle on third and seven to keep a drive alive. Then Smith found Hill along the sideline to get the Jets to the Patriots 32 yard line. Smith's pass attempt to Holmes was behind him, tipped and intercepted by Talib to end a drive that had the Jets in field goal range. With four and a half minutes left Smith threw another pick on a pass intended for Gates. With just under a minute to go Smith threw yet another interception to Talib on a pass intended for Stephen Hill. At the end of the play Nick Mangold was flagged for a late hit out of bounds on Talib that caused a scrum along the Patriots sideline, and both Willie Colon and D'Brickashaw Ferguson were ejected. The Jets defense at least held the Patriots to no more scores despite all the turnovers.
Rookie cornerback Dee Milliner was benched by Rex Ryan in the second half, and despite that the Jets defense was pretty stout all game long. Its now easy to see why the Jets turned to Vlad Ducasse at left guard as his 325-pound frame was used mostly to block Vince Wilfork and he did a fairly good job. Normally that duty was assigned to Nick Mangold. The Jets will return home on Sunday the 22nd to face the other rookie quarterback in this draft class, E.J. Manuel, as the Buffalo Bills come to MetLife Stadium.
