The New York Jets will have two active quarterbacks tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Geno Smith and Matt Simms. Neither has dressed for an NFL regular season game before. The Jets had added Brady Quinn to provide some experience and depth at the quarterback position but cut him today. It's expected that the team will look to sign Quinn again next week. Mark Sanchez is out with a shoulder injury.
It was announced earlier this week that Geno Smith is going to start for the New York Jets against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tomorrow. It will be the first NFL regular season game for the rookie quarterback out of West Virginia. When he comes over to the sidelines he will be greeted by another quarterback dressing in a regular season NFL game for the first time, Matt Simms. The Jets will only have two active quarterbacks.
The decision to release Brady Quinn is financially-motivated. Releasing Quinn and bringing him back on Monday means that his contract won't be guaranteed. That means that the Jets can cut Brady Quinn later on in the season without eating his contract, when and if Mark Sanchez returns,
The biggest news for the Jets this weekend is the start of the Geno Smith era at quarterback, but the backup situation is a concern. If Geno Smith falters or is injured tomorrow the Jets will be forced to turn to Matt Simms. Simms impressed the team this preseason but is not someone the team wants taking meaningful snaps from under center. Being that the Jets are expected to re-sign Brady Quinn on Monday, the team will have to hope to skate by tomorrow before fixing up the quarterback depth chart for the remainder of the season.
With the roster spot opened up by the release of Brady Quinn, the Jets added linebacker Danny Lansanah to the roster from the practice squad.
