The quarterback controversy is officially over, as the New York Jets have named Geno Smith as their starting quarterback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend at MetLife Stadium. The Jets drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After OTAs and minicamp, it was clear that Mark Sanchez had the edge in the quarterback race. Geno Smith closed the gap at the start of training camp and was officially announced as the starter today.
For the second time in five seasons, the New York Jets will have a rookie quarterback under center for their season opener. The team announced today that Geno Smith is their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Geno Smith started one game in the preseason, throwing three interceptions and running out of the end zone for a safety against the New York Giants.
Mark Sanchez, the other competitor for the starting quarterback spot, is in a weird position. His injury against the Giants is likely what clinched the quarterback competition as he is expected to be out until at least week three of the regular season. There has been talk of the Jets possibly placing him on injured reserve which would put him out until at least week eight, and that's if the team decided to use their ability to bring one player back from the IR on him.
This looks to be the beginning of the end of Mark Sanchez as a member of the Jets. The team restructured his deal last offseason in a way that basically guaranteed his roster spot for this season, but the Jets will likely cut him this offseason and move forward with Geno Smith.
