The quarterback competition is over, but perhaps the controversy isn't. The New York Jets will start Geno Smith at quarterback over Mark Sanchez, despite a very spotty performance from Smith in his start against the New York Giants in the third game of the preseason. Mark Sanchez was far from perfect during his playing time, but ultimately outplayed Geno Smith. Whether the shoulder injury decided the competition or it was truly an organizational shift in direction, Geno Smith will be under center against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
The New York Jets have broken away from the Mark Sanchez era. Apparently Rex Ryan is on board with the move, along with new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and new general manager John Idzik. It's a big shift for the team, especially considering that based on play alone, it's tough to justify starting Geno Smith over Mark Sanchez. Mark Sanchez was injured against the New York Giants and the injury may have played some part in the decision-making process.
While there is always some excitement surrounding a new face at quarterback, there have to be some lingering questions. Did Geno Smith actually win the job based on the merits of his play? Will the Jets sink or swim with Geno Smith or is Mark Sanchez still a factor? How much did the injury to Mark Sanchez impact the decision?
Whatever the case, it's a fresh start for the Jets offensively. A new face under center will make 2013 an interesting season to watch on that side of the ball, as the defense is expected to hold the rope for the team once again. With Rex Ryan entering an important season in his coaching career, it will be a weekly question as to how he handles the situation. It will also be worth watching how Mark Sanchez handles being a backup quarterback and knowing his future prospects with the team are bleak.
The news of the decision was first reported by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
