The New York Jets started the difficult process of cutting down to 53 players by releasing kicker Dan Carpenter and defensive tackle Antonio Garay. The release of Dan Carpenter confirms that Nick Folk has won the kicking competition once again. With a young, deep unit across the defensive line, Antonio Garay ended up being one of the odd men out after being signed as a free agent this offseason.
The New York Jets kicked off their round of final cuts by cutting two veterans, kicker Dan Carpenter and defensive tackle Antonio Garay. The Jets signed Antonio Garay during the offseason as a veteran addition to a strong group of young defensive linemen. Dan Carpenter was added to the roster earlier this week after being cut by the Arizona Cardinals.
Dan Carpenter made his only field goal attempt with the Jets on Thursday. Ultimately he was a longshot to unseat Nick Folk, who has held down the kicking job since 2010 despite yearly challenges for his spot. Dan Carpenter was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2009 for the Miami Dolphins.
Antonio Garay signed a one year deal with the Jets as a free agent this offseason. It was actually his second stint with the Jets, after spending some time on the team's practice squad in 2009. Garay went on to blossom with the San Diego Chargers, then returned to the Jets this offseason.
These two cuts are just the beginning. The Jets will be cutting plenty more talented football players before the end of tomorrow in order to get down to 53 players on their active roster. At that point, the team will sift through the cut list from other teams around the NFL and could potentially scoop up a player or two and shuffle the roster a bit more prior to the first week of the regular season. NFL teams have to be down to 53 players by 6 p.m. on Saturday.
