In this all important third preseason game for the New York Jets, battling the New York Giants in the MetLife Bowl for the Snoopy Trophy, the Jets somehow overcame five turnovers to win in overtime 24-21. This is the second time in the three years of the MetLife Bowl that the Jets have won, improving their 2013 preseason record to 2-1.
After Geno Smith and the Jets went three-and-out the Giants took one play, a David Wilson 84-yard touchdown run, to open the scoring. The Jets subsequent drive got moving quickly with four straight Giants defensive penalties that concluded with Smith finding Ben Obomanu on a 22-yard pass and catch for the touchdown to even the score at seven. On the Jets fourth drive, Smith was intercepted by Prince Amukamara on a pass intended for Ryan Spadola. Brian Winters came in at left guard as Vlad Ducasse, who started the game, limped off the field on the Jets next drive. Stevie Brown picked Smith a few plays later.
Josh Brown gave the Giants the lead 10-7 on a 39-yard field goal. After trading punts, Geno Smith started out next drive well with passes to Tommy Bohanon and also to Stephen Hill for 32 yards, but then he was intercepted a third time, this time by Justin Tuck. Brown missed a 53-yard field goal attempt. Around the two minute warning the Giants were on the Jets doorstep after Eli Manning connected with Hakeem Nicks inside the 10 yard line. The Jets defense stopped the Giants on third down as Leger Douzable made a nice play on Andre Brown, then Dawan Landry tipped a timing pass to Nicks on fourth down.
Leger Douzable sacked Curtis Painter to end the opening drive of the second half. Bilal Powell ran it in from a direct snap to finish off a drive that saw Geno Smith connect with Ben Obomanu and Kellen Winslow, to put the Jets up 14-10. The following drive by the Giants ended with a Josh Brown field goal to make it 14-13. At the start of the second half, Willie Colon moved to right guard while Brian Winters continued on at left guard.
Early on Smith connected with Hill, who fumbled, recovered by Tyler Sash of the Giants. The Giants failed to score after the turnover. Steve Weatherford pinned the Jets inside the five yard line and a few plays later Smith ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety, not realizing how close he was to the end line. That error have the Giants a 15-14 lead. As Mark Sanchez came in behind the second team line he started to drive the Jets down the field, but dropped a low snap from Caleb Schlauderaff and Mark Herzlich recovered for the Giants. Josh Brown converted the 50-yard field goal attempt to make the score 18-14. Two plays into the next drive Sanchez was crunched by Marvin Austin and left the game, eventually having his throwing shoulder iced down. Tevita Finau sacked Painter inside the five yard line and Weatherford shanked a punt for 35 yards to give the Jets great field position with under three minutes to play. Matt Simms found Ryan Spadola via a bullet throw to put the Jets up 21-18. Painter moved the Giants down the field and Brown tied the game at 21 to force overtime.
Billy Cundiff won the game for the Jets with a 32-yard field goal about halfway through over time after Simms found Spadola on a 70-yard catch and run.
On Thursday the New York Jets take on the Philadelphia Eagles to conclude the preseason. Mark Sanchez will not play and despite that normally starters don't play much, if at all, in this game, Geno Smith needs at least the first half to prove if he should start week one, or if Sanchez will return healthy against the Buccaneers.
