On Tuesday the New York Jets continued to tweak their 75-man roster with the signing of kicker Dan Carpenter, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. In turn they released kicker Billy Cundiff, and somewhat surprisingly last night they also released tight end Hayden Smith.

Thursday night as the New York Jets close their preseason against a traditional preseason rival in the Philadelphia Eagles, it seems newly signed Dan Carpenter will be given a chance to beat out Nick Folk for the starting kicker's job. Carpenter being a former Pro Bowl kicker is something that may give him an edge to win the starting role.

The former rugby star Hayden Smith was released by the Jets on Monday night. It appears that the Jets coaches are pleased with the play of both Kellen Winslow and Konrad Reuland as backups to Jeff Cumberland. Reuland can be utilized in a h-back role out of the backfield as well which makes him more versatile than Smith. Hopefully Hayden Smith will be back with the team as a member of the practice squad after the cut down to 53 players on Saturday.

The New York Jets also tweaked their depth chart, moving Vlad Ducasse to the starting left guard position with Brian Winters behind him, and Willie Colon to starting right guard, his more natural position along the line. Many of the 21-22 players that will need to be cut, waived or released to trim down to the 53-man limit will be playing on Thursday night against the Eagles in the final audition before the regular season opens September 8th.
