New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez injured his shoulder against the New York Giants Saturday night, an injury severe enough to knock him out of the game and keep him out of Thursday's Preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanchez is currently listed as day-to-day. With Geno Smith putting forth a poor performance against the Giants, the Jets still have a very cloudy situation at quarterback.
The New York Jets quarterback competition is still going, even though Mark Sanchez won't take a snap against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday. Geno Smith performed poorly enough that the team couldn't possibly hand him the reins at this point over Mark Sanchez, but naming Mark Sanchez the starter and then possibly being forced to start Smith because of Sanchez's injury isn't how the team wants to start the season. As Rex Ryan said at his postgame press conference, the team will announce the starting quarterback when it is appropriate – as in when they know the full story on Mark Sanchez's injured right shoulder.

Marvin Austin delivered the hit that knocked Mark Sanchez out of Saturday night's preseason game against the Giants. Sanchez made a nice play and delivered a strike to Mohamed Massaquoi despite the hit. Rex Ryan stressed afterwards that getting Mark Sanchez snaps in the second half of the game was important in regards to the quarterback competition. Up until the injury, it seemed as though Sanchez would win the job by default given the erratic play of Geno Smith.
If Mark Sanchez is healthy, it looks like the Jets will be playing him to start the season as the quarterback who didn't outright lose the competition with his play. If Sanchez can't play, Geno Smith will get the starting nod by virtue of being healthy. Either way, it's not what any team envisions when they have a quarterback competition.
