The San Francisco 49ers made a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs that Alex Smith in exchange for a 2013 NFL Draft pick. That trade, plus three expected compensatory picks, will give the 49ers 15 selections in the 2013 NFL Draft, but they have their eyes on a bigger prize. That prize is New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis. The Jets need draft picks to attempt to grab some cheap, young talent, which would make the two sides a perfect fit.
Darrelle Revis is a superstar, but the New York Jets need young talent. New Jets general manager John Idzik promised that this team would be built through the NFL Draft, and the way to do that is with volume. The Jets, without many assets capable of bringing back multiple draft picks, may use Darrelle Revis as the means to that end.
The 49ers have a deal in place to send quarterback Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jets were thought to have some interest in Alex Smith, but are apparently instead going to sign Brady Quinn and another free agent quarterback.
With the pick they will acquire from the Chiefs on March 12 as the new league year starts, plus the picks they already have, the 49ers may try to trade for Darrelle Revis. As Jason Cole of Yahoo! writes:
"The 49ers are among a handful of teams that have discussed making a run at Revis this offseason, according to two sources. In fact, the 49ers are poised to make a run at Revis even if it’s just for one season (although that could be problematic from Revis’ standpoint)."
San Francisco wants a No. 1 cornerback. Darrelle Revis is the No. 1 cornerback in the NFL. The Jets want more draft picks. The 49ers will have more selection in the 2013 NFL Draft than any other team. Matchmaking for a trade doesn't get much easier than that. A Darrelle Revis trade might be closer to happening than we all thought.
John Idzik said that he would build through the draft and it makes sense to do so. Building a team through the NFL Draft, as opposed to free agency, provides lots of cheap, young talent that can keep your team out of salary cap trouble. In addition, teams that draft well always enjoy sustained success. There's a significant reason to why the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers maintain their success: they dominate the draft.
